Is it just me or were you able to us the Direct Select Tool the masked photograph and Object > Rasterize to the desired resolution without unmasking the object? Has this gone away?

Now I am habving to unmask and remask just to change the resolution of a placed image.

Hi

Try double-clicking with the Selection tool to go into Isolation mode.

Unfortunately, you don't tell which version of Illustrator you are using.

Apart from that, at least as per your rather vague description, I'm not quite sure about what issue you are actually talking about.

Can you clarify a bit?

Using Object > Rasterize on a photograph with a Clipping Mask merges the photograph and the path into one "image".

Changing the resolution of a photograph placed in Illustrator needs to happen outside of Illustrator (most likely Photoshop).

If you linked the photograph to the Illustrator document when you placed it, you can use Edit Original in the Links panel to get to Photoshop and change the resolution.  It should be fine in a Clipping Mask while doing this.

If you did not link the photograph to the Illustrator document when you placed it, you can copy and paste it.  You'll probably want to undo the Clipping Mask for this so that the path used for the mask doesn't go to Photoshop as well.
