Hi there,

I'm experiencing a similar problem. I hired a graphic designer who sent me Illustrator files but when I open them I get the error "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [x!fd]". I'm using Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 22.0.1 and my operating system is Mac OS High Sierra Version 10.13.3 (17D47). It sounds like our designer created and saved the files on a Windows machine. (I don't know if this has anything to do with it)

I'm really not very proficient with Illustrator (which is why I hired a designer) but I do need to be able to work with the files. They seem to open when I click 'OK' after the error message, but the colors seem off and in some cases objects were not where they should be.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this, either on my end or the designer's end when he's saving the files?

Please create a new thread with your issue.

I have tried to get them to work on this issue. On files in house we have been saving to Illustrator 8, then closing the file and reopening them. The down side is that the type gets converted to curves. You can copy all the type and paste it in the file though. I only do this with my files, I don't like doing it with other customer files as I don't know if anything is being deleted when I am opening them.  Adobe has been ignoring the issue recently. I just reported it again the bug report as now I cant save the files back to Illustrator 8 in the newest version of Illustrator, because when I do the file won't reopen. I have to do this in Illustrator 2017 which is ironic since they open ok in 2017 but there is a weird issue with the spacing in the file.

Not this helps but...

I am having the same issue but with a file that came from CorelDRAW. The files open fine after selecting OK, and I can continue to work on it.

BTW, the file crashes in DRAW, thus the need to continue work in Illustrator.

"The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error.  [x¡fd]

Is there a solution yet?

No, unfortunately there has not been. They are aware of the problem. This same issue causes spacing not to work in these files. I have sent files for them to look at before. I am hopeful still for a fix.

Hi,

Thank you for your quick response Spikestrider.

When you say spacing does not work, are you talking about the text spacing or something else. What kind of issues does it cause in the file that I should look for. Client did not supply us with anything as to what the file is supposed to look like so I don't know if anything is changed. Do you know what it does to the file, for example does it shift the position of graphics and/or text blocks, does it change the colors, order of layers, do things drop out?

Thanks in advance.

From my experience, when the file has this corrupt message, I have noticed that when you add type and then you use the space bar and then type some more, there is no space between the words. If the type was set in the file in an older version, everything is ok. Only when you try to add new type is there an issue. Also you can set type in another file and then copy and paste into the corrupt file and the type will remain ok. You just can't typeset in the corrupt file. Really weird. Even when they had fixed previous versions of Illustrator when this message came up, the space between words would still go away when adding type.
