Recurring "Converting dragged items to EPS fortmat" Dialog Box

Hello,

I'm having an issue with moving objects in Adobe Illustrator. Every time I go to grab and move any item, whether it be a shape, text, image, etc., there is a delay and a "Converting dragged items to EPS format" dialog box pops up briefly before I can move the object I am trying to move. See the attached images for a couple examples. I am running Illustrator v 27.9 up to date, and recently updated to MacOS Sonoma 14.0 on my machine (issues started subsequently after this OS upgrade). For comparison, these same issues are not occuring in Photoshop or InDesign, where moving objects occurs as normal without delay.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or solutions!

Some further testing on my part and scaling or rotating objects appear to work normally in Illustrator. Just draggin objects appears to be the issue.

I am also experiencing the same issue, but I am still on Mac Ventura OS, so I do not think this is an asolated issue with the Sonoma.

An update on my end that I found out the issue for me only occurs when using Illustrator throw Mac's native screenshare application.  I work remotely on this machine and experience the issue through there and that's only when the issue occurs. When I've used the computer natively or had a coworker use it, Illustrator operates normally, so for me it is looking for like a screenshare issue and less of an Adobe issue.

This is the same issue I'm having. And it's specifically ONLY the native screen share program that has this issue; I swap back and forth between remoting into my office Mac with my personal Macbook and a desktop PC. I originally wondered if it was an issue with how illustrator was dealing with virtual displays, but that doesn't seem to be the case-  I've tested remoted into my office computer using both computers at the same time- I can watch myself drag items perfectly fine on the Mac screenshare when I do so using Teamviewer or Splashtop, but if I try to do the same thing from my Macbook the pop up appears for a microsecond. (and I can see on both screens this occur.)

The majority of my office also uses Mac's native VNC- I'm the only one having issues, but I'm also the only one who's currently updated to Sonoma on both my office and personal Macbook. The one coworker that has updated their personal Mac to Sonoma, but not their in office Mac is not having these issues.

I've also tested using various mice, the trackpad, and tried all sorts of settings for both options to see if anything would help, but nope. I'll also add that I have absolutely no issue dragging items on illustrator on my personal Macbook itself (without remoting in.) Even using the exact same version of Illustrator- I've even tried multiple version of Illustrator. I am also able to use Teamviewer to drag items with no issue. It seems to be related ONLY to the native VNC on a Sonoma to Sonoma connection.

I have the same problem and it's only when I'm working remotely, using the Apple Screensharing app. When I'm in the office I don't have the problem. The issue is so bad that when I try to drag any placed images my computer glitches and goes to the sign in screen. I can't figure out if it's an Adobe or Apple issue. It's extremly annoying and time consuming. I like to work quickly and this completely hinders my efficiency.

Same problem here, OSX Sonoma 14.3 even with the latest version of Illustrator 28. The issue arises only when using the native OSX VNC screen sharing. Simultaneously, the "Libraries" window occasionally pops up. I suspect it's some conflict with shared libraries; I've disabled them, but the problem persists. It's extremely annoying!

Yup, I get the same issue going through the native VNC screenshare. My Libraries window will open when the issue first arises.

Has anyone found a way to fix this? I've been dealing with it since updating to Sonoma too. It is ruining remote work for me. Is Apple the correct party to talk to or is Adobe the the best source to reach out to?

And this is still happening in Sequoia. Apple needs to fix this it seems. I would encourage everyone to go over to their community bug pages and report there, because I've been reporting this since upgrading to Sonoma and Apple doesn't seem to be paying attention to my lonely voice.

Hello @Luke351666613lty,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind sharing more details, like the OS/Illustrator version, a sample file, and a screen recording of your exact workflow and the problem, so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for looking into this, Anubhav. I'll let Luke send you his examples, but here is a quick screen recording of the issue. For me, it also seems to activate my "CC Libraries" panel even when I have it closed, after the first time I open Illustrator and try to work a file. Not sure if that's part of the issue. I'm also attaching a screen recording of a similar problem in Photoshop. Not sure if you can relay this to the Photoshop team. I've tried making a bug report for both apps, but no one has responded to me yet, and this has been going on since the macOS Sonoma update.

My current setup is:
Home Mac: Sequoia 15.1
Remote Mac: Sonoma 14.6
Illustrator (on remote Mac): 29.0.1
Photoshop (on remote Mac): 26.0

Hello @BTA-1138,

Thanks for sharing the details. Would you mind checking if you have any third-party plugins/extensions installed and temporarily disabling them to check if it helps? Also, try running your apps under Safe Mode (macOS) and installing any pending macOS updates (https://adobe.ly/4fxZ0O7) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks, Anubhav. I have tried all of those things, and the problems still persist in Illustrator and Photoshop, even under the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.1. This is only an issue using the built-in MacOS Screen Sharing app to remote into another Mac. We have several remote users at our company, and have experienced this on multiple versions of the Photoshop and Illustrator apps, on both Intel and M-chip Macs, and only started experiencing the problem after any remote machine was updated to Sonoma or later. The user's home Mac could be any version of the OS -- it only seems to be a problem if the remote Mac is Sonoma or later.

Something changed in Sonoma that made Photoshop and Illustrator not work well when dragging items on the canvas. Maybe some kind of screen drawing issue over the remote network? This doesn't seem to be a problem in other graphically intensive apps like InDesign or After Effects. And this does not happen with other third party remote software like Splashtop or TeamViewer, but those apps have limitations that the built-in Mac Screen Sharing app does not.

I've tried placing this bug report several times on the Apple Support website, to no avail. I don't know if you have any contacts at Apple support, but I have gotten nowhere for over a year now. And it seems I'm not the only one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This mirrors my experience. The only thing I will add is that the problem seems to worsen when the objects being dragged or more complex. When moving a high resolution image or complex vector object, Screen Share can lock up to the point I am disconnected from the remote Mac.

Hi @BTA-1138 @Luke351666613lty,

It seems that this issue may be related to the macOS Screen Sharing, and it’s been affecting users on macOS Sonoma. A helpful step to test would be to try running Illustrator and Photoshop in Safe Mode (not remotely) on your Mac and ensure that no other applications are running while you test. This can help identify whether the issue persists under more controlled conditions.

Additionally, it would be great if any of you experiencing this could share a sample file that demonstrates the problem. This will help us investigate further and potentially provide more specific guidance.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Yes, this issue is most likely related to the macOS Screen Sharing. It is affecting users on both Sonoma and the latest versions of Sequoia as well. The problem does not occur on any Mac locally -- ONLY on Macs that are being used remotely (connected to over the built-in mac OS Screen Sharing app), so working in Safe Mode on the local Mac does not solve the issue. When the remote Mac was running an earlier OS like Ventura, this issue did not occur -- ONLY when the remote Mac was upgraded to Sonoma or Sequoia did this issue occur.

This problem happens on any opened Illustrator file, but the more complex the file is, the more likely it will outright crash, as opposed to a simpler file which will flash the "error" message for a split second (as detailed above) and cause a lag when moving a shape and will not draw the shape as it moves like it should. In Photoshop, this issue is more noticeable the larger the file. I haven't really noticed it for files below 1920x1080, but it becomes more apparent when dragging layers around any file that is about 1920x1080 or larger.

If Adobe is unable to research or solve this issue, then do you have any way of contacting Apple for us? I have tried several times over the past year or more to contact Apple through their bug reporting site and community pages, but no one has responded.

This is very frustrating for all Mac/Adobe users who are increasingly working remotely in recent years.
