Does anyone know how to remove the checkered background on this illustrator file. I can't just peel off the layer, then black ovals appear around the lightning bolts

The image needs some kind of background to work correctly, since it uses blending modes to create the effects. You can replace the checks with any coloured background, but there has to be one of some sort.

Those black ovals are setup for RGB using a blending mode gradient to make the glow. You may be able to remove them, or change their gradient stop to 0% opacity white.

Select one of the black ovals, then select >> same >> appearance and delete or adjust cooro on them all. You can then use Shift Command D to show a checkered background that does not print, but to help show the white lighting against the white canvas, or if that scares you place a black rectangle in background to proof.

Are you planning to put one of these lighting bolt on top of something else and do you need to keep this vector?

I was going to use the lightning bolts for this Photoshop illustration. But I ended up salv making them. Thanks for the reply.
