Repeating pattern separates. Pls help!

Community Beginner ,

I need help in the swatch pattern I created. When I use the rectangle tool and pick my own pattern to enlarge it, it just separates into small boxes. Like the design has columns instead of one seamless pattern. I have attached the picture of my issue below. I am so upset, I've wasted a whole day because of this and will probably waste more if I couldn't get some help.

Thank you for your time.

Hey.

First of all, personally I think that you haven't wasted a day—you've created a lovely pattern, and it just needs a little fixing up. 🙂

Your pattern tile is too wide, so the overlap isn't happening; this should be fairly easy to fix, though. Double-click the pattern in the Swatches panel, and you'll be taken into the Pattern editor. Using either the Pattern Tile tool (at the top of the Pattern Options dialog) or the width/height numeric fields, change you tile to get the overlap desire

It should only take five minutes or so to fix, then you'll be able to use your lovely artwork. 🙂

Hi Tony Harmer!

I did it! You are my saviour ahaha, thank you so much with all my heart. I couldn't honestly do anything earlier because I was so upset I just want to sulk the whole day! But you are so helpful that you saved my day 🙂 And I agree that the time I spent even though the day has been so frustrating is still productive.

I've attached here the new pattern based on what you taught me. It still needs a little bit polishing, but the most important thing is it fixed my issue. Yayyyyy. Thank you for being helpful, for the kind feedback about my artwork and for sharing your knowledge, you have a lovely weekend!

Hi Monika,

Thank you so much for the link 🙂 I've seen this earlier, but due to lack of attention I did not see what probably could have helped me in the first place. I will go ahead and read this carefuly again haha 🙂

This old tutorial explains how the patterns work.

http://vectips.com/tutorials/create-a-trendy-seamless-type-pattern/

With this base, you can take the principles and use the pattern maker tool inside Illustrator.
