Saving Own Templates to Adobe Illustrator

Community Beginner ,
Nov 22, 2021 Nov 22, 2021

SERIOUSLY - It's 2021 people and we still cannot save a template in Illustrator?? I work with A5 and A6 almost daily yet I cannot save it as a template. I am using Illustrator 2022.. Working in an iMac 2021 with M1 Silicon.

I have looked at a million threads about this topic - when will Adobe ever release this feature?

I have given myself permission to save in the "Cool Extras -> Templates" Folder AND "Cool Extras -> Templates -> Blank Templates Folder". Even when I save a template in here, it never shows in my new document window. Has ANYONE managed to get this working.

I read somehwere you can buy templates on Adobe Stock which will then show up there - HOWEVER I do not want someones design in my templates and having to clear their artwork everytime I open it. I just want a blank A5 and A6 template. Is it too much to ask???

I hear you! It is strange that we can't just save our own templates.

I know its not what you want but have you just tried having a master files set up how you want and then just opening them every time and saving out as a new file as soon as you open..?

Also have you put in a request for this..? I guess the more people do the more likely it will happen...

Yes - I have a master files batch, it's just annoying when you can select A4, A3 etc under the templates list but not add additional sizes. Thanks

On MacOS, define the file as Stationary Path, and it always opens as a copy, leaving the original intact.

Still hoping for Adobe to create a nice and easy way to save our own Templates from within Illustrator.

Exactly what I do not want to do.. Might as well just open one of my master files, quicker than this. If I can click A4 and A3 under the New Document box - why can't I add other sizes there as well... that is my argument here.

Unfortunately that's as far as the conversation can go, as it isn't possible.

Create the documents at the  A5 and A6 size based on a Print preset, name them A5.ai and A6.ai and save them on your desktop.

Copy them in the Adobe Illustrator 2022 application folder in: Support Files > New Document Profiles > (your language folder)

You need an admin password to do that.

The easiest way to find them is to check: Preferences > General > Use legacy “File New” interface.

They will show up when you choose: File > New...

Save (on an unsaved file) or Save As and then choose template...
