During the course of an artwork session, I save "versions" (so I have something to go back to, in case things get FUBARed. Well, FUBAR happened! One of the more important shapes, in my piece, vanished! I figured it must have, somehow, become hidden, so I hunted, to no avail. No problem, I thought, this is a shape I created several versions back, I'll just open the previous version and retrieve it.
Now, this is what it gets weird. It's missing from the previous version (a totally separate file!). So, I opened the version before that. STILL MISSING!! That's were I stopped--just in case the act of opening these files is CAUSING this shape to fall into whatever black hole seems to be floating around in my studio!!
Have anyone of you ever experienced such a thing? Does anyone have an idea that might help me find my lost shape?
FYI: this is on Win10. It's AI version CC 2017-1.0 release.
I created the shape using the Pen tool - with no stroke and with a gradient. I put it in it's own sublayer. The sublayer folder is still there, but I don't see the shape.

I found my shape! But, a mystery persists -- it's beginning to look a lot like a bug!
The sape was there, in the same sublayer it out it in, but I must have accidentally colored it black (the same color as the background -- thus rendering it cloaked). The mystery is, the same thing is true in previous files. It's like something went into each of my saved version files and change this shape to black! I even tried completely closing AI (on the hypothesis that AI was altering the files as I was opening them), then reopening it, then I tried opening a version file that has never been opened before (the only time it was ever open, was when I created it!)
Even in THAT file, the shape was black!!!
has anyone seen this happen?!?

Hi GraphiteFingers,
It sounds like this mystery of the disappearing shape could be related to GPU. Do you have GPU Performance on in Illustrator? If so, try turning it off in your Preferences and let us know if that resolves the issue.
Best,
Wren
