Slow response and tools unavailable

Hi,
Since a few weeks, all of the sudden (i had already intstalled the update with no previous issues) when opening a file, Illustrator becomes super slow in response. Worse is that i can't access any tools from flyout menus as they just don't appear (e.g. i can't switch from drawing a circle to drawing a rectangle, basic stuff).
When i start a document, or open a recent file after just opening Illustrator, there is no problem, but it only occurs when i thereafter want to open a file (either from within Illustrator itself, or via Bridge and Finder).
Basically i'm finding myself drawing in a new (or recent) document to then having to restart Illustrator which of course is a hassle.

Anyone else having this issue?

Thanks for the tips!
I had tried many options, including a new intallation without myearlier prefs, but only going back to an older version helped.
Looking in deeper, i found that my hardware is too old. (Photoshop also had serious issues since it's last update to 2022). So it's time for a new Mac 😉

Try a prefs reset.
