Streaking on Illustrator canvas

New Here ,
Jul 18, 2023 Jul 18, 2023

Hello -

It has come to our attention that ink streaking can occur on an AI canvas due to Illustrator trying to "connect the dots" from a styus tip to touch points located either on or even outside of the canvas area.

The typical scenario is that the user is holding his drawing stylus while using one of his other fingers to steady his hand, or the side of the hand is resting on the tablet.  Since the canvas interprets the touch points as legitimate draw-to positions, it creates streaks from the pen stylus tip to those points.

There does not seem to be a way to either disable touch within the AI app, or designate that touch points only be used for gestures.

It would be good to know that Adobe is aware of this problem and is coming up with a fix.

Currently using Adobe Illustrator 2023.

Thank you.

rccohn,

To me it sounds like an issue with the interaction between stylus and tablet, unrelated to AI.

Can it also occur in other applications such as PS or non Adobe equivalents?

The same streaking problems can occur in other graphics apps such as Affinity Photo and Krita.

I am admittedly not familiar with all of the ways in which AI uses touch, but it's pretty clear that the app does not distinguish between ink produced by touch points and ink produced by a stylus when drawing strokes.  This has been traditionally a difficult touch rejection problem - ie to know when touch input for drawing or gestures is needed over accidental touches from palm and fingers while drawing.  Other tools, such as Affinity, give the user a way to toggle the touch data off when it is not needed.  Tablets, such as those from Wacom, support a touch API that indicates when touches are rejected.  This type of API can be used to block such touches from putting down touch points that can be streaked to.

Anyway, my observation about the streaking is not new.  Please see: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/309...

Thank you.
