How did you create the path that you want to type on? That warning usually means that you are trying to type on either a complex path that it won't allow or a path that is already being used for other purposes, like masking. If you created a simple shape like a rectangle or a path with the type tool it should be working. If this is the case, can you post a screenshot with what you created along with an expanded view of your layer panel.

Sara,
In addition to what Michele said, if you have a compound path and you wish the (Path) Type to follow either/one of the constituent paths (which may be the outer path or an inner path (enclosing a counter/hole), you may Alt/OptionClick that constituent path, then Ctrl/Cmd+C+F to create a copy, then lock/hide the original compound path and apply the Path Type to the copy path.

It may also mean that you missed the path. How did you create the path and what does your Text Cursor look like when you hover over the path?

That mean that you are not select a path. The path is under the another shape and you can't select it for typing.
