Text boxes breaking / overset text when opening file in AI 29.2.1

I created a document in an older version of Illustrator (1 or 2 iterations before the version I'm currently using... 29.2.1), and when I bring the file in to the new version... many of my text boxes are changing to act as if the text is overset. No amount of hyphenation will suffice. The text boxes are large enough— as nothing changed in the file between opening in one version to the other. In fact, all the text disappears from view in these text boxes and only shows the red overset text plus box. What the heck is going on? Photos show what it looks like, and how far I have to widen the text box before text will actually show up.

Hello @Scott33615188vbop,

Would you mind checking if Illustrator behaves this way with all files? Also, kindly share a link to a sample file here after uploading it to a file-sharing service so I can check it on my end.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

To be honest, I haven't noticed it on other files, but this is my most pressing concern— as it's a set of product labels I'm trying to complete for a client. Linked is the overset text box in question (there are similar ones across multiple labels... all for the ingredients list).

Hi @Scott33615188vbop

Thanks for sharing the file, and I’m really sorry for the delayed response. I checked the file on my end and was able to replicate the issue. The text appears correctly in the 2024 version but disappears in 2025, which suggests some form of corruption in the text itself. I tried changing the font and even copying the text into a new file, but unfortunately, that didn’t work either.

I’ve escalated this to the Product team for further investigation and will keep you updated as soon as I hear back. In the meantime, the only workaround that worked for me was saving the file without PDF compatibility. Until the issue is resolved, I’d recommend saving your file without PDF compatibility by unchecking the "Create PDF Compatible File" option while saving.

I know this must be frustrating, and I truly appreciate your patience. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help!

Regards,

Srishti
