hello every one

i have been trying to make a module pattern based on this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JZARIfHg2I

, but when i want to use pathfinder intersect option it says "The filter produced no results. Please select two overlapping paths"

i also tried the solution people gave to the same problem to others, which was using expand or expand appearance, but my expand appearance is not avaible ( its gray) and when i press expand option, it just doesn't do anything, no window opens.

so i am in atrap -_-

my illustrator version is : Adobe Illustrator 2020

In this tutorial I'll be demonstrating how to create seamless background patterns with Adobe Illustrator CC. The result will be a single square tile that can be repeated infinitely. This works great for use as a background on a website where a different number of tiles are used in order to render

You might want to use Crop instead. make sure your paths are filled paths, not simply strokes. So, yes, expand the stroked items. Then, with the small rectangle in front, select ALL objects and Crop. (Or, alternatively, Divide, although that doesn't eliminate the objects outside the small square.... depends on your end goal)

As per your screenshot you are not selecting overlapping paths (as far as I can see).

Therefore the warning message is pretty normal.

Am I overlooking something?
