Three-shapes clipping mask

Community Beginner ,

Hi all,

I'm trying to make a clipping mask out of four polygon shapes, slightly apart from each other that I want to use to cut a picture underneath.

The problem is, if the four shapes are un-grouped the clipping mask will only be made using the shape that's at the top of the stack in the layer panel.

If the four shapes are grouped, the clipping mask will just make everything blank, the photo disappears and it's not cut into any of the four shapes.

What am I missing?

thanks

Problem solved, apparently the shapes had to be turned into a compound path in order to make a clipping mask out of them.

Object->compound path->Make

thanks anyway.
