trying to connect path of shape to many lines.

Hello,

I am pretty new to illustrator sorry if this is a basic question but I have had trouble finding a solution.

I have made a half gear shape, then I drew a bunch of lines to create the image below.

The problem I am having is that i need to join them all together in order to fill different colors between all the different lines. Whenever I put everything together then select all and try to join the paths it really screws up by adding in a bunch of random lines like in the picture below.

Would someone be able to tell me how to join all the paths together and still retain the look of the picture below.

Don't try to join the paths. Go to the Help menu and search for the information on the Live Paint Bucket. I'm fairly certain that is the tool you want.
