Two shapes that overlap with jutting corners

New Here ,

I'm trying to create a shape which is actually two separate paths.

Is there a way to "hide" or blend those corner points so that there's no overlap jutting out? Maybe there's a way to join both corners, but both shapes need to remain because they will be colored differently.

Jpell,

If you wish to have a sharp corner (otherwise, you can just switch to Round Join, which corresponds to Round Cap), always have the outermost edge as a continuous path.

You may very well be able to select both paths, then Pathfinder>Unite and redraw the vertical line (with the Pen Tool or the Line (Segment) Tool).

And you may use Live Paint Group to colour as you wish.

You can only join two of those paths. I'd suggest you join the leftmost with the rightmost one.

If you don't need to preserve the paths as paths, you could go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke which will turn the paths into closed shapes. Select them all, then select the Shape Builder Tool, and while holding down the Alt key drag over the parts you want to remove.
