unable to save empty document

trying to export a document as a PNG and getting this error... as you can see the document is not empty, at least not my definition of empty. but illustrator seems to think it is... any ideas?

There are several method for exporting. Which one you try? Do other methods works fine?

yes the document saved as an ai. but didnt export

never mind... i got it.  

i had to check the box  "use art boards"     🙂

think I finally found out what's causing the problem -

a hidden clipping mask with no other visible objects above the mask (incl. clipped objects)
