Unable to use toolbar in Illustrator after Sonoma update

Explorer ,
Oct 26, 2023 Oct 26, 2023

Just updated my mac to Sonoma 14.1/ Illustrator version 28.0. After update it is no longer functioning.

Clicking any tool on the toolbar menu jumps the finder to the desktop. Clicking back on the artboard brings the toolbar back up but it is impossible to select a tool (key commands still work).

This did not happen before the Sonoma update and it only happens in Illustrator.

Have done all the usual steps such as restarting, deleting all the adobe stuff from the library and reinstalling illustrator.

Do you have Proofpoint installed? Or Rectangle, Magnet or Zoom?

I've only just upgraded my Mac to Sonoma. Everything working perfectly beforehand. My Mac has slowed down considerably. I have lots of RAM and lots of storage left still so that really isn't a problem. Macbook Pro is just over a year old. When I toggle out of Illustrator into a another app, I find it impossible to get back in, am unable to save my files in Illustrator, unable to edit them etc. It's become useless and I've only just renewed my subscription!

I have no other updates to apply!  Any ideas?

If everything worked, then why did you upgrade?

Sonoma is the cause of a lot of grief. Sadly in this forum we do not have a lot of clues about what's happening with that system at all.

If you are running Window managers such as Rectangle, Magnet or Moom, disable them for Illustrator. Some Antivirus might cause issues as well. And Illustrator does not like the "Displays have separate spaces" setting.

I'm not running any weird apps or add-ons. I upgraded my OS to Sonoma,
because Apple kept slowing my Mac down to such a point that I finally gave
in and upgraded. Usually once you've upgraded the Mac runs fast again. I
had no idea that there were so many problems with it, otherwise I wouldn't
have upgraded.

It is usually good to update your OS regularly though, for security reasons.

Apple supports 2 versions back with Security updates. And unfortunately they do not care about creatives anymore. They couldn't care less for these issues.
