Use a texture and gradient of an image as Stroke, not fill.

I am trying to get a textured, gold outline on a logo. I want it to be the texture and gradient of an image of gold.
I tried to create a clipping mask but I don't want the fill, only the outline. Is this possible in Illustrator?

Thanks!

You don't need to outline the path. You can instead use it as an opacity mask.

first you need to convert the stroke to outlines :

object -> path -> outlines stroke

if the result was "compund path " the clipping mask will work perfectly , if not, convert the outlined stroke to a compound path

object -> compound path -> make

Now you can  make the clipping mask

please let us know if that helps,

regards.

Yes, this is very helpful feature. Even a typography can be used as mask without converting into path
