Width tool is not working - even with basic brush definition?

Hello,

I'm new to Adobe Support Community, though I've been using the products for a few years now.

My problem is that after using pencil tool, which has no fill and no stroke and is set to basic for brush definition, to draw a line, the width tool is unable to be applied on the line.

Could anyone tell me what's causing this problem? Thank you, in advance!

Below is a screenshot of my Illustrator document:

P.S. My Illustrator is v26.1 running on Windows 11.

Firstly, I apologize for being unaware of the simplicity of the task at hand and starting a discussion about it.

My stroke was turned off. And after turning it on, and giving it some weight (like 5 pt), I could finally use the width tool!

Thank you for letting me make a post though, because it started me on an adventure to solve my Illustrator problems!
