Do you know how to change the number of wires in an object? I've seen drawings with three or four wires. When I use the mode the objects I draw have ~ a dozen.

Assuming that by "wireframe mode" you mean View > Outline, the "wires' are the paths you have created. The only ways to get rid of them is to hide them or delete them.

Maybe I am wrong but I think Illustrator#17923 is thinking that one can see different types of views in Wireframe mode.
In a 3D application you can choose how you see an object and I think this is what Illustrator#17923 is thinking about.
Like what you see in puppet warp.
Am I following you correctly?

Illustrator is a 2d program.... wireframes in 3d programs denote mesh objects that are sub divided (aka... more vertex points "vertices" and those make more 'lines')
In illustrator if you sub-divide the mesh tool/a rectangle/shapes you can break up with the grid function... that will show more lines... but it is mostly irrelevant in the 2d environment.

--If you are on a 3D view in the 3D effect you can see the object in wireframe.
Please note that it is an effect and not a real 3D!
You can not control the wire frame it is based on the shape!
Or when you use gradient mesh you can control the mesh or wireframe!

When you are in a outline mode you can decide that some of the shapes will be in outline mode and some not...
maybe this is what you are relating to ? by controlling wireframe?
