Space bar not working on Illustrator for IpadOS

Hitting the space bar immediately saves and exits the workspace when editing text, what I need is for the space bar to (drumroll please)...insert a space (I know, what a novel idea!).

Just illustrator.

Sometimes I have Creative cloud open in the background but that shouldn't affect anything.

OK, sorry. I missed that you were asking about the iPad. I just tested it with an old USB keyboard attached to my iPad and it worked normally. The spacebar inserted spaces into text.

Does it work when you don't use a keyboard, but the onscreen keypad?

Seems to work just fine when I use the virtual keyboard. Why would the apple keyboard that goes with the ipad (ipad pro) cause these problems? I can't find any settings to change what the space bar does.
