A specific file crashes on InDesign 2019 on mac Mojave

I've been working on a file in InDesign CC 2019 (14.0.2) on macOS Mojave (10.14.5). Everything's been fine up until I tried to change a paragraph style in the file I was working on. Specifically I was trying to change the "Space Between Paragraphs Using Same Style" value (under "Indents and Spacing") to something not available in the dropdown by typing it manually. Then InDesign crashed. So here are a few things I've tried:

- tried opening it back up and launching the auto recovery tool. It didn't actually do anything when I clicked 'yes' to recovery.

- tried opening a different file. That file opened and worked just fine with no problems in ID.

- tried recreating the error by trying to create a paragraph style on a blank doc and changing that same setting. It worked and ID didn't crash.

- tried running a script in a different post to convert into an IDML. It fails as well.

- I've been saving these files through Google Drive file stream. My current version is v19. I downloaded v18 and v1, both of which also crash too, so the issue pervades all versions of this particular file.

- I've uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of InDesign.

- I've purged all my InDesign preferences.

At this point I have absolutely no idea what could be causing the issue and I don't have any way to recover the content in the file and I would be losing all of my work.

Before you make any changes, save this file as IDML, open this and save as new INDD and work with this on. Check if any changes have been because your file seem to have some inconsistency which is causing the Problem.

InDesign is crashing when I‘m trying to open the file, so saving to an IDML this way isn’t possible. Is there a different way to convert to IDML outside of InDesign?

You can do it with a script, blind open and saving as idml. Look here:

Re: InDesign 6 is crashing when attempting to open a particular document. All others are opening OK.

That was the script that I mentioned in my original post - I've already tried running this and and just tried again as well - no dice.

Hi Edward,

Thanks for reaching out. I am sorry to hear that a particular file has gone corrupt and is crashing InDesign. There are multiple factors both internal and external to InDesign application that can lead to document corruption, however, we can take a look and see if the file can be repaired.

Please email your InDesign file to corrupt_indesign_docs@adobe.com and we will take a look at the document.

If the file is larger than 10 Mb, you can zip the file and upload to the Creative Cloud account and send us the document link.

I must also inform that file recovery can't be guaranteed with a 100% success. We'll surely try our best.

Regards,

Srishti
