Abbreviation Script in InDesign

New Here ,
Oct 03, 2017 Oct 03, 2017

Hi there,

I am trying to abbreviate a varitey of titles in InDesign for a large directory I am making for work. I need to abbreviate titles such as "President" to "Pres.", "Director" to "Dir." and Manager to "Mgr." and many more. I know I could use the Find and replace tool but I am wondering if there is a script I can run that would do this for me to save some time. My InDesign document has over 800 pages and a lot of listings so any help you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks!

No need for a custom script, InDesign comes with a couple of examples, and one of them is FindChangeByList. That can do what you ask right away. All you have to do is adjust the plain text data file to your needs, filling in what to find and change to.

I agree with Jongware and that usually is my go-to. That said, there are several solutions that may suit:

Automatication make a paid plug-in that's well worth it called Multi Find Change - www.automatication.com

Kerntiff Publishing Systems also has another solution: Xchange Strings / XStrings - Kerntiff Publishing Systems

Kasyan Servetsky has his own solution that looks interesting: Find change by queries

Peter Kahrel has the GREP Query runner: GREP query runner | Peter Kahrel

If the answer wasn't in my post, perhaps it might be on my blog at colecandoo!
