I don't want to ever do business with Adobe ever again due to sketchy billing practices, and better products on the market (blubeam and blender): I cancelled my subscription. Is there a way that I can import the text of the file into notepad? Are there any programs capable of importing the indesign file formats, from this awful company (that I also happen to be a shareholder in)?

I think you're looking for Affinity Publisher.
Like the others you mention, it's quite... "different." "Better" is, well, subjective.
Just for future reference, it's wise to check that there's a pool below before you jump off the balcony. (And to make a note of the exact day the trial period ends. Those can sneak up on you.) 🙂

Hi @Andrew2483599322mk , You can Export your documents to PDF and then export the text from AcrobatPro or Reader:

Very complicated, just export the stories as RTF, why go this PDF-route...?

It's not clear whether the OP has a working version of InDesign. If s/he does, yes, export to RTF is the simple option. But they also asked for an alternative, which is why I pointed them to Affinity.

Ah, I understood it has he has, but did no longer wanted it in the future...

The question is not entirely clear, but I think we've covered the range of ways to get text from an InDesign doc that cover everything except having NO app in which to open it.

I think Rob's suggestion to extract text from the PDF must be pre-supposing that a PDF was already exported before InDesign was removed. If not, and InDesign is no longer available, there is NO option that will gain access to the text that I'm aware of.

Maybe the document has 50 stories and you don’t want 50 text files?

Well, there's also cut and paste from the ID screen to Notepad. It would be light on preserving styles but it would extract the text, which is all that was asked.

if indesign is stilll working on your machine you can also open the file, put your cursor in any story and choose File > Export and choose from RTF or plain text.
