Adobe Fonts Not Appearing in InDesign Menu After Installation

New Here ,
Aug 29, 2024 Aug 29, 2024

Whenever I install new fonts from Adobe's font website, the fonts do not appear in the drop-down menu on InDesign. I have restarted my computer, forced sync, and ensured that InDesign is up to date. I have also installed all these fonts directly onto my computer through the Creative Cloud, and they still do not show up.

This has been a problem four times now as I need to install new fonts for typesetting and book cover design regularly. Eventually, they do show up after hours, but that is not conducive to my work as these things need to be finished quickly.

Is this a bug? Or this is an issue that I could somehow fix on my end?

Thank you.

I have found that issues with Adobe fonts can often be fixed by the simple process of signing out of your account in the Creative Cloud desktop app and then signing back in again with your Adobe ID. This may sound crude but it is the electronic equivalent to kicking a machine in the side. It makes no sense that it works—but it often does!

Hi @Mars28816207vwml,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having with Adobe Fonts not appearing in InDesign. It can be frustrating when your workflow is interrupted by font issues.

To help resolve this, could you please provide the following details:
1. Which version of InDesign are you using?
2. What OS are you running?

Here are a few steps you can try to fix the issue:
1. Ensure the fonts are synced correctly in the Adobe Creative Cloud app. Sometimes a sync issue can prevent fonts from appearing.
2. Clear the font cache on your computer. This can resolve issues with fonts not appearing. Reference: Troubleshoot font issues (https://adobe.ly/3X8zYgH)
3. Close and restart InDesign after syncing the fonts.
4. Verify that the fonts are activated in the Adobe Creative Cloud app. Go to the Fonts section and ensure they are marked as active.

If the problem persists, please let us know if the issue occurs with specific fonts or all fonts, and if you can share a screenshot of the Creative Cloud Fonts tab, it may help us diagnose the issue further.

Looking forward to your response!

Thank you,
Abhishek Rao

Hello! I just want to say THANK YOU so much for this answer. I had also tried what the OP did and nothing was working. I am on an employer-owned Mac and VPN and had not thought about looking at my Creative Cloud. It had glitched out and was not initializing. I have just spent the last 30 minutes trying to figure out why a font I had a month ago suddenly stopped working. Thank you so much for this suggestion! It sounds so simple now!

Hi @Mars28816207vwml , How are you installing? Adobe Type fonts get Activated from https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts, you don’t install them in your system’s font folder. When you Activate a font or family there can be a delay—depends on your connection speed. Click the Add Family and wait a few minutes:

You can 'install' local via the Adobe CC app (not fonts.adobe.com)
That said, I'm having the same issue. Multiple restarts, family shows as added, and activated locally and cloud. Fonts work in Adobe and Figma but can't get it to show up in keynote or powerpoint. Making me look a bit of an idiot too my client and it's driving me a little crazy.

Adobe Fonts in Adobe apps (inc. Adobe CC) and on the Adobe website, are terrible. I've had the same issues for over five years - possibly longer. Some fonts do not load. And the ones that do take forever to load - sometimes over 30 minutes and longer - incredibly disruptive to workflow, especially if you need to export or print a document. If I want to explore the collection I have to scroll, very patiently, and wait for each one to appear. God help if I actually chose to use a font -  downloading them can take an age. Why can't these be loaded in the background as soon as I open the More Fonts panel, so they're immediately accessible whenever I want them? Having to wait as each one loads is Internet 1.0. I've often waited for hours for fonts to load in existing Illustrator and InDesign documents. But wait! There's more... so - I've spent about an hour scrolling through the fonts to load them into the cache. I managed to do a little design work - great. Except, when I come back to Illustrator a few hours later, guess what? Yes, you've probably guessed correctly - the fonts need to be loaded all over again.  This is not an internet speed-related or RAM issue. This is a cache issue. I've tried everything under the sun to remedy the problem - reset cache, reinstalled/deactivated/reactivated iCloud, reset preferences - to no avail. I'm running an M2 Mac with 96gb RAM. Surely Adobe are aware of the issue?!? Why oh why am I paying for this service when it simply does not function correctly? It's incredibly disruptive to workflow. Patience is lost Adobe.

Hi @perfectamundo,

I’m truly sorry to hear about the ongoing issues you’ve faced with Adobe Fonts. To get to the bottom of this, would you mind trying the below suggestions?

  • Close all Adobe applications.

  • Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to completely remove the following:

     - Creative Cloud Desktop application
     - CCLibrary
     - CoreSync
You can find instructions here: Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.

  • Reinstall the Creative Cloud Desktop application.
    - Download and install it from this link: Creative Cloud Desktop Download.

  • Relaunch InDesign and check if the fonts are loading properly.

  • Temporarily disable any antivirus software on your Mac and test the issue again.

Additionally, to help us investigate further, could you please share:

1. The version of InDesign you are using.

2. The macOS version on your system.

Let me know how it goes after trying these steps.

Thanks,
Abhishek

Hi, I've followed your instructions.

I'm afraid I still have the problem - when I open Illustrator, the 30 fonts that I've used in the document from Adobe Fonts fail to activate.
I'm using Adobe Illustrator 29.2 and MacOs 15.2 (24C101)

As per @Bill Silbert - log out of your Adobe account everywhere

InDesign/Illustrator - go to the Help menu and log out

Log out of Desktop App

Log out of Creative Cloud online

Reboot

Log back in on Creative Cloud online

Log back in to the Creative Cloud desktop app

Launch InDesign/Illustrator and go to Help menu and ensure you're logged in.

See if it works now.
