We are having an issue with InDesign crashing at launch, the only way we can open the application is set it to always run as an administrator.  Here is the event log error:

Faulting application name: InDesign.exe, version: 12.1.0.56, time stamp: 0x58c988ec

Faulting module name: PMRuntime.dll, version: 5.0.0.191, time stamp: 0x58c9856e

Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC 2017\InDesign.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC 2017\PMRuntime.dll

Faulting package full name:

Faulting package-relative application ID:

If we open InDesign from the command prompt it works or if you launch it from the troubleshooting wizard it works fine.  It just seems to be opening files in windows explorer that causes it to crash.  Running it as an administrator if they launch a file from a share InDesign opens but the file itself does not, they have to click file then select open then navigate to the location to open the file.

    Hi melissam,

Hope the issue is solved by steps suggested above, if not, please share some more details like:

Operation System (Exact Version of Windows).

You may Also try to reset preferences manually by following these steps:

    • Open locations
    • C:\Users\sbali\AppData\Roaming\Adobe and
    • C:\Users\sbali\AppData\Local\Adobe
    • And Rename InDesign folders.

Also, check how application works in safe mode( https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode )

or new user account (https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026923/windows-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account-in-windows-10 )

Please update the discussion if the issue is resolved or if you have any further query.

    Regards

    Hi trsiskot,

There could be multiple reasons for crash on launch.

Before we proceed to any conclusion I would request you to please share some details like:

    • Operating System(Exact Version of Windows or MAC)
    • Exact version of InDesign
    • Where the install file is located
    • Are you launching application directly from CCDA or double-clicking any file or directly from start menu
    • Also, please share crash report if there is any. (Use Pastebin Pastebin.com - #1 paste tool since 2002!) or you may use Log Collector Tool

    Looking forward to your response.

    Regards

    Srishti

Try restarting InDesign from the Creative Cloud and also try reseting your preferences.

    For InDesign

    1. Exit the application

    2. Press and hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command+Control (macOS)

as you start InDesign. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new

preferences files are created when you start the application.

Which version of InDesign and OS?

Have you tried trashing your InDesign preferences?

In InDesign Preferences under the GPU Performance Tab try unticking GPU Performance. At least it works for some on a Mac, presumably you have a similar thing on Windows, if so, it's worth a try.
