Adobe Indesign files saved to SMB NAS share are defaulting to hidden

Hi Guys

We have moved an existing legacy Windows file server ( using Acronis Connect for AFP )  to our Dell Unity NAS device using only SMB. We wanted to try and standardise and simplify our setup for macs storing files like WIndows clients.

 

Our macs are using macOS Ventura 13.4.1 and InDesign is 18.3 . Although our users can save files to the network share we have the following issues. Appreciate some of these may b macOS and SMB specific. Just included for relevance.

 

Adobe InDesign seems to save some files as "hidden" ( in windows they have hidden attribute ), you need to show hidden files on mac which isnt great. - This happens with pdfs, and jpgs so far. 

Network browing and searching is really slow, although the NAS is very quiet.

 

Any suggstions or fixes on the Adobe side, is there a way to turn off hidden files, or is this more an issues with macOS and SMB interaction.

This is all NAS configuration, nothing on the Adobe side that will address this issue.

 

In my situation, Mac users experienced similar issues when connecting to NAS via SMB protocol. And, the solution was to enable both SMB and AFP protocols, allowing each Mac and Windows users to work and share files seamlessly.

Thanks for the reply. So the Dell Unity NAS only supports SMB or NFS, no native AFP. This share is dedicated for mac so shouldnt have any conflicts with Windows side. 

 

I suspect the main culprit is Apples poor SMB implementation. We are most likely going to persue a Windows file server with Acronis File Connect which we used previously for AFP and it was better that the NAS.

Searching and browsing files is also slow on mac. No issues on Windows\Linux side with SMB and NAS hardware is performant. 

 

I will perhaps see if Dell have any other Unity devices which support AFP for our office migration.

There are some options like disabling virus scan, and maintaining current firmware that have affected performance on our NAS
