align top but not topmost

Hello

I always find I work around this so thought I would ask.

I want to use the align top function on 2 objects - but I don't necessarily want them to align to the topmost object.  In other software, it depends on the order of the selection as to which object the two will align to but this doesn't seem to make a difference in indesign

Picture for an example, I want both objects to align to the top line of the square on the right, not the left ie the square on the left should move down

Is there a way?

Thanks!

Here's a 'live' demo. The first try is a 'default' behavior, the second one - what you need:

Select both, then click on the right object repeatedly. It will get bold outline - that means it is a 'reference' object now. Apply alignment.
