Hi Jannes,

posted your issue at the InDesign Prerelease forum and Barry, a user of this forum like me, tested the fonts on OS X and had crashes and freezes of InDesign 2020 and 2021 as well. However, Barry came up with a solution:

The downloaded and currently used version 1.002 of the Aref Rugaa font had some features that are not compatible with the current Adobe software. A new version was issued a few days ago that makes it compatible again, version 1.003. You can download this version from:

https://github.com/alif-type/aref-ruqaa/releases/tag/v1.003

There is also this information about one of the fixes they did in version 1.003:
"Restore ss01 feature and remove the its replacement cv01 feature, it broke the font on Adobe apps!"

( Don't ask me what this exactly means…)

I downloaded and tested version 1.003 of Aref Rugaa with InDesign 2021 and had no issues at all.

Case closed, I think…

Hi Jannes,

also tested InDesign 2020 with the font.

No issues so far. Editing worked! Where it crashed InDesign 2021 when the fonts were supplied with the Fonts folder in InDesign's application folder. Or I had a "ongoing, never ending" freeze of InDesign 2021 when I supplied the fonts with a Document fonts folder. I had to end InDesign's 2021 process in the Task Manager; did that after more than 5 minutes when InDesign was unresponsive.

Try to install previous version of ID. If bug won't there - use it this version.

Connect with Adobe support chat about it.

Hi Jannes,

how exactly did you install that font?

What's your version of InDesign on what system?

Thanks,

Thanks.

Installed by double clicking the font file.

Now I re-installed again through the system font defaults.

Win 10.

I am able to use regular font now. Bold one is still the problem.

I can live with that through the acute crisis 🙂

Hi Jannes,

alternative:

Move the font files to the Fonts folder of your InDesign application.

From my German Windows 10 machine where I did exactly that:

No crashes on my side when editing the text.

Hi, I have absolutely no problem with this font. Did you try to clear the font caches?

Thanks, but that seems very bold move! I am afraid that nothing works after that 🙂
