Blurry text when placed over certain colors

I'm laying out a children's book in InDesign. Ive imported the pages of my book from Illustrator by dropping them into Indesign. I've then done the text for the book in Indesign. Is this the best way to do it? For some reason my text looks sharp when it's over white but when it's over red it looks pixelated. Pretty strange. Is this just a problem on my screen or will this show up when printed?

Presumably you Placed the image as a native AI file in InDesign and then added the text.

How are you viewing the document View > Display Performance > High Quality Display is recommended.

(You have the first word bolder, is that what you want?)

I suspect this is just a display issue in InDesign. How does it look in an exported PDF?

I've zoomed in to 6400% on your PDF and it is crisp on my monitor.

I'd like to see sample in a .indd as well.

What sort of monitor and resolution are you using? Any OS scaling applied?

I don’t see a problem in your PDF. Here it is zoomed in—Object Inspector shows the text object filled with 100% black with Overprint turned on:

"Dropped into InDesign"? I hope you mean "File > Place"; not drag n drop.

Make sure all color models are the same; preferably RGB. InDesign has a color model, too, under Edit > Transparency Blend Space

While transparency and color management policies and blend spaces, along with Place vs drag-and-drop might affect color, I don't believe they should have any effect on the crispness of type.

So I'm assuming from your response that it's bad to literally drop the file into Indesign? What's the difference?

Check and see if your type is set to crisp, on the top bar.

That's for Photoshop, this is InDesign.

Yes that is correct photoshop, my bad. Did you try to convert the Type into outline? Be sure to duplicate the layer first, for backup.

Hi @jonl17076061 , is the black text set to Overprint? The display of CMYK Black could vary a bit depending on whether the fill is set to Overprint or not, and the document’s CMYK profile’s soft proof. Here you can see the Black text that I have knocked out has a subtle fringe which could look like a blur when the text is zoomed out. 

In any case you want to make sure your black text is set to Overprint, so there isn’t a registration problem on press.
