Not sure why this does this. Same border settings for both Item & Description, yet the block does not merge. There is clearly overlap, so they should merge. Other styles in this document merge fine. Just this particular one does not. Styles are based on Item & Desc. If I change the Desc style to be based on Item / HL, it will work, but then it doesn't update properly should I change the base Desc style.
Thoughts?
You need to RESET applied ObjectStyle...
Either "clear overrides" or apply a different one - then set number of TextColumns again.

Can you share - a sample of - your document?

Hey Dave, the settings look identical. Are the styles based on "No Paragraph Style"? Can you try to rename the styles leaving out the forward slashes (wild guess)?

Other styles named with slashes perform fine. Just this particular one. Maybe an issue with the font, though I don't know how that would come into play.

Maybe try setting everything again?
Was the numerical values always in inches? Or converted from mm - and even when they display rounded "correctly" - internally, there aren't identical?
Internally, InDesign keep all values as doubles to 9 or even more places...
That's why I've asked for a sample file - just Styles - I'll run it through my tool and compare raw values.

messaged you a onedrive link. Let me know if it works for you. I rig it to work by basing the desc style off the Item / HL style. I would rather base it of the Desc style. You can see all the other styles in the doc are set up the same way - just this particular one has issues when based off Desc.

Even without my tool - I don't see any problems?
Of course, I won't be posting any screenshots here.
BUT - there are some "strange" glyphs / characters in the names of your CharStyles?
Maybe try to remove them first?

But there is something wrong...
On the 1st page - when I start editing YOUR texts, on green background - I have the problem you've described ...
But not when I edit Last page - with a Dark Blue background - I don't have this problem?

Yeah, that's odd. If you reapply the HL styles to each, it will redraw & fix. Page 4 was the page I was having issues with.

I don't have any character styles with that name - it looks like you're listing Paragraph. And they're not in my file like that. Also, not the page I'm having any issues with.

OK, I think I'm onto something...
Let's start from this:
Adding "B" - changes nothing:
BUT adding "b":
Applying "Item" style to the descrition part:
and then "description" style again:
So it looks like editing "description" part - messes it up...
But then, re-applying "HW / Desc highlight" - doesn't help - I need to apply other ParaStyles...
BUT - there is more...
If I'll apply ANY of the styles - to the "description" text:
but the one marked in Red - then "Desc Highlight" - it fixes things - but if I'll apply "HW / Desc" and then "HW / Desc highlight" - it doesnt fix it...

There is more...
If I'll start playing with the text in the RIGHT column - first edit brings back this problem to this edited part of the text... BUT when I try to edit another paragaph in the RIGTH column - the first part in the right column - got fixed on its own?!?!
Then, if I'll edi ttext in the LEFT column - the problem doesn't repeat in the LEFT column - and it FIXES problem in the right column?!?!
I'ts like a whack-a-mole?!?!

And there is more 😉
ADDING or DELETING any part of the text - when there is nothing selected - just cursor in the text - creates this problem...
BUT SELECTING some text - even a single character - and REPLACING IT WITH ANYTHING or pressing Delete / Backspace - solves the problem??

Moving pages around doesn't help... Moving just this page to a new document - also doesnt help...
AND - there is still more 😄
Problem occurs when editing FIRST line of the "description":
Then, when editing goes to the second line:
Adding even ONE character:
and so on...
But the problem - for me - doesn't occur on any other page...

I'll try to "clean" IDML file in older versions of InDesign...
Same problem in 2024...

We (my team) utilise these "highlight" styles based on Item / Desc styles where we frame the copy. We've noticed this bug on many files, started from scratch. Often times, moving the text frame & moving back will fix the redraw. It's weird, for sure. Can't figure out if it is related to the font or the Para styles.

Woohoo. Nice work Robert. Much appreciated. Something squirrely in the Object Styles was throwing it, eh. I will have to keep an eye on it. Thank you for your help.
