Can't open older document in newer version of InDesign.

Hi! I've been working on an inDesign document for the last few months and took a couple weeks off. When I returned, inDesign had updated automatically and now my document will not open in this newer version. Are there any workarounds with this? Can I convert my older document to the newer version? Or revert back to the old version?

I have it saved as both a pdf and indesign document. Please help 🙂

I've had this and I had to open the file in the older version and then save as idml and then I was able to open in any version

A newer version can open older documents so the issue you have is something else. Firstly what is the older version that you had prior to this update which was opening the file? You can reinstall one prior version to the latest version using the Creative Cloud Desktop app. See the instruction at the link below, use that to install another version and check if that fixes the issue. If it does open then export the document as IDML and then try opening that in the new version.

Also, what is the exact error that you get when you try to open the file?

Which platform / OS version?

If Mac & Sonoma - InDesign isn't fully compatible / supported.

What exactly is the error you get?

Where are your files located?

Do you have full read / write privileges to the account / folder with your INDD file(s) ?

Hi @Sophia33947363g5eq:

InDesign is set up to always open up files from an earlier version in a new version. It gets tricky when you go the other way, although there are ways to do it.

I'm not sure why you're having difficulty so can you tell us a little bit more about your system?

  1. What version was the InDesign file created in, and what version are you trying to open it in?
  2. What operating system are you using, exactly?
  3. What happens when you use File > Open to open up the InDesign document in the newer version?

As an aside, I highly recommend disabling auto updates for your Creative Cloud apps in the CC Desktop App. That way you can update when you're ready and you can choose to leave the old version when you add a new one. It keeps these issues from happening to you. To do this, you need to open up the CC Desktop App, click your avatar in the top right corner > preferences:

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
