Can't open or download Indesign file from cloud

New Here ,
Aug 18, 2024 Aug 18, 2024

I was working on my design portfolio when Indesign suddenly crashed. Although my file is saved on the creative cloud, every time I try to open it, Indesign crashes straightaway (this happens only with this file). Then I tried to download the file from the cloud, however, an error occurred each time so it won't download at all. It says that my file is 700mb so I'm sure everything is still there. Can someone please help me as the file is for my uni assignment? Thanks!

Hi @ZH28863056:

Adobe creates automatic incremental backups of your cloud documents. Maybe you can open the file on https://assets.adobe.com/cloud-documents website (and not in InDesign) and access an auto-saved version? Try this:

  • Open the Creative Cloud website and select Your files > Cloud documents.
  • Open a cloud document and select the Timeline icon (far right).
  • In the Timeline panel, you will find auto-saved versions of your cloud document. Hover on a cloud document version to see more

Looks like your file is corrupted...

Were you doing ONLY Save? How long were you working on your file? Have you linked or embedded external graphics?

Try this script:

http://kasyan.ho.ua/indesign/all/blind_open_and_idml-export.html

Next time - do Save As with a new name - at least at the end of the day - and the next day continue your work by using this new file.

1 - backup copy,

2 - file will be reorganised so less likely to get corrupted again.

Hi Robert,

Thank you very much for your response!

I'm still quite new to Indesign so I'm learning. It's a big design project and the file is nearly 700mb. I spent 2 weeks working on it, and yes I was only doing save with only one copy on the cloud. There are linked and embedded external graphics (photos + my drawings from Illustrator as well). The only problem is that I don't have a copy on my computer right now so I don't know if there's any chance of me recovering it before my assignment submission 😞

Thanks again,

Gordon

You should be able to download it from the cloud?

I also shared the file with my friends to see if it was just a problem with my computer, but they couldn't download it as well.

Maybe you can access one of the earlier versions of the file so that you don't lose everything.

Hi Barb,

Thank you so much for your help! I tried it before but it didn't work. However, I just tried again to go back a bit further in the timeline and was finally able to recover at least some part of my work! Thank you 🙂
