I can't open files with EPSes. It me an error that a plug in is missing but doesn't say the plugin and doesn't let me open the file to figure out the error.
When I create a new file, it won't place EPSs. Just turns the box into a text box.
Now I have hundreds of files I can't even open.
What's up with that?

I am opening an ID file with placed EPSs. (Although, the linked EPS would not open in AI, either.)
I can't avoid EPS because we literally have thousands of EPS barcodes on items. I don't think you get that 'just change' isn't easy when you are working with tons of files that customers expect you to have available.
I will speak to my colleagues about changing the way this is done in the future but that doesn't change the files which are in production now and we have to access for future item changes.
Your 'just don't use EPS' advice is incredibly unhelpful.

"Do not use EPS in any way. Use PDF/X-4 instead."
There is literally nothing wrong with the workflow here. EPS is still a viable format, as long as the user knows its limitations, which the OP seems to know. These files are not being printed via INDD to a non-Postscript printer, so that's not an issue. These are not Illustrator files with fancy high level effects and transparencies and there's no need for colour management for a simple UPC code. That does not in any way answer the question at hand which is "why doesn't my file open properly, etc, etc."
One thing I want to ask is where the linked files are located: are they on a local drive? and external drive? an online repository (Dropbox, etc). Does the problem exist if you move thse files into the same folder with the document to test?
Check your System Preferences > Security & Privacy and make sure your Adobe apps have Full Disk Access. This has been a continuing issue by some people once they upgraded to Monterey, as the permissions tended to get reset. This results in remote files, even on an external drive conneted to your Mac, not reading files properly. Something to check, anyway.

The files are on a one drive but, as I have been saying before, that would have lead to a missing link but the file would open. There seems to have been something wrong with that particular EPS. The EPS alone wouldn't open in Illustrator. So, now my main beef with Adobe is to be able to open files with damaged linked files. Put an error. Allow the document to open.

Hi @GrumpyGraphics ,
just for testing reasons if the one EPS file is perhaps damaged:
Open the EPS with the Acrobat Distiller app and see if it can be converted to PDF.
If that fails post the error message you'll get with Distiller.
Is the EPS file placed and linked with the InDesign document?
Or was it embedded in the document after you or someone else placed it?
