Cannot place doc, docx nor rtf: InDesign (at least 15.0.1, 15.0.2, 14.0.3) crash or warns re filters

Hi all.

I have set up a new computer, after which I was able to open earlier indd files without problems. I could also move pages from and to InDesign-documents, etc, everything worked out well.

However, I cannot import doc-files or docx-files, as the Indy just crashes. I tried to save the doc to rtf, but problem persists. These are all supported file types.

Then I downgraded Indy from 15.0.2 to 15.0.1. But still the problem persists. I also tried installing 14.0.3, without any help. At some point, the problem turned from crashing to "Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation.".

If I save the indd as idml and open it, I have message "This command would create a large number of page items and would severely degrade performance. Data will be placed as embedded EPS". And the program either gives the same error about no filter found, or crashes if I try to place document from freshly imported idml.

If I try to open and convert the file, program hangs up and does nothing. At first run it converted file but problem persisted.

Is there anybody who could point out to a working solution? I hope I do not need to clean all and reinstall all Adobe software (as suggested here).

All the Best,

Ari

In a galaxy far-far away when InDesign was CS and CS2 we all have this bug if path/folder/name was have some non-latin character in the name. Can you copy one of your docx to the C:\ name it as 1.docx and try to place into the new .indd?

I unistalled everything. Rebooted. Killed all Adobe processes. Cleaned all with the Adobe Cleaner. Rebooted again. Installed all via CC. Created an empty indd document and tried to place doc-file. Same error: "Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation."

The imported file was created with LibreOffice as older doc-format (which in my experience is more reliable than newer formats) and it just has words "Does this work?" (Liberation Serif 12).

I have tried to place xlsx, doc, docx and even txt. All give the same error about filter not found.

On the other hand, pdf imports beautifully, as well as images.

And of course a deadline is coming wooshing by. 😞

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner
