Cannot Place this file. No filter found for requested operation

When trying to place Microsoft Word-files to InDesign I get this message. Error: Cannot Place this file. No filter found for requested operation. I´ve seen the same problem occured to others but this is docx-files, or txt-files or rtf-files. It works with copy/paste, but not placing.

We have several computers running Windows 11 but the problem just occurs on two of the computers. It worked a couple of weeks ago on the same Windows machines. All computers are updated to latest version, both Windows and InDesign. The files is in a folder on the same computer (no network). Files are made in Microsoft Office, both on mac version and windows version, neither works. All are named with normal characters. So none of the explanations in similar posts work.

I have restarted both Windows and InDesign/Creative Cloud and even reinstalled an old version of InDesign and it doesn´t work.

Adobe support is of course closed.

Is there a way to get those filters to install myself or what???

I figure it out.
I am from Balkan and I had Ž (zcaron) character in file name.

After I removed it, it imported sucesfully.

Is the content in some way confidential? If not can you share files so we can test this? Have you also tried to reset preferences in InDesign? https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/reset-indesign-preferences-and-other-troubleshoo...

Yes. I have tried resetting preferences. Deleting and reinstalling InDesign 2024. It did work before updating to 19.0.1. Also installing InDesign 2023. Nothing Works. I can attach one of the documents for you to try. I could also mention I use the same exact files on five other Windows computers and they work on those.

My guess is that there is nothing wrong with any files or Windows. It is a bug in InDesign.

@Ralla1963 I was able to place the file in InDesign 18.3 and 19.0.1 without any errors (I’m on macOS 13.6.1 on a German InDesign). I would log this along with a video of the process and the sample file so the developers can have a look at it. This might be a very specific error on your side.

docx should work, should it? Like I already written it doesn´t work any text-files with docx, doc, txt or rtf. The error message saying a filter is missing is saying to me that a filter is missing. Something is not installing properly.

What version of InDesign? Are the files in a OneDrive or Dropbox folder?

Latest version 19.0.1. But I tried to uninstall and install InDesign 2023 and it doesn´t work there either. But it did work a couple of weeks ago when I updated to 19.0.0. Something happened on 19.0.1. And I can place the same files in Illustrator.

Hi, @Mediakurser ,

what exact version of InD (xx.x.x).

Did you try to open those files in Word? Does it work?

If yes, do a save-as and save that file under a new name. Can you place that new file in InD?

"Place in InD": Please describe exactly the way you are trying to place the files in InD.

Do you have full permissions to handle those files? What folder are those files in (path)?

Regards

Stephan

Thanks for replying

It is version 19.0.1. But I tried to uninstall InDesign 2024 and install InDesign 2023 instead. But that didn´t work either.

Yes, I can open the files in word and it don´t work if a resave them with another name. It doesn´t work with txt or RTF-files either.

I import the files by File >> Place, locate the file on my computer and press OK to place them. That´s when I get the error message. The same way I have been importing text to InDesign since september 1999.  It doesn´t work with drag and drop or by importing them in the Properties folder.

I am administrator in Windows and have full access to all files. The document is saved on my desktop and the files in a folder called Text on the same desktop. No complicated file path to blame. And it doesn´t work with any text files no matter where the document or the files are stored.

Thanks for replying. That is probably the case.

But, Adobe. It has worked before and it works in Illustrator so I still consider it a bug or is it Adobes intention that only files with american letters can be imported.
