I've run into a problem where I can't open an InDesign2017 in InDesign2018.
It simply starts the loading process but doesn't open up. The loading process simply stops with no error messages etc.
For a number of reasons I need to get the file to open in 2018. Other files created with iD2017 seem to open OK in iD2018.
Can anyone please help with identifying what might be causing the problem with this one file?
Cheers....Scotty
Derek,
thanks so much for the quick response.
It seems the problem is actually related to the file size (its rather large due to link embedding). Appears ID2017 can open a file of that size but ID2018 can't.
I've unembedded links and all is fine now.

Maybe it's a document corruption. Save the CC2017 version as an IDML doc, rename it and try to reopen it in CC2018.
If you're working on a document for a long time corruptions can build up, use Save As occasionally and incrementally rename to clear the crud build up.

Fort the OP and any lurkers.
There have been other reports of users with files larger than 2GB that become completely corrupt. You're a lucky one in that you were able to rescue that file.
This was not a fluke. While embedding a small image like an icon or two is fine, a large document should always have images linked.

Bob,
thanks for your input. Whilst I am no InDesign expert, I'd assumed that, as I hadn't seen anything in documentation stating otherwise, that the 'embed' function didn't have any limits.
Also, I'm curious why the files could be worked on normally in ID2017 but can't even be opened in ID2018.
Cheers....Scotty

Like I said, for small objects, no problem, but and InDesign file should never be allowed to get that large.
The age old rule applies here; just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Bob,
with respect, I would expect an organisation like Adobe to warn users of potential problems if one embeds too many links. We're not all 'experts' and we should get on limitations to link embedding and file sizes.
Also, I'm still in the dark as to why the problem only exists in ID2018 and not previous versions. Why is this the case???

It did exist in previous versions. It has existed for years.
I can find numerous features, tools, etc in the application that need to be used properly. Embedding is one of them.
Look, I don't work for Adobe. I'm a volunteer here with experience in InDesign literally since the day it was released in 1999. I'm trying to help and offer the best advice I can. You can accept the advice or not accept it. But, it's important to remember that InDesign is a professional tool which requires a certain amount of knowledge.
One final thought; Home Depot sells power tools. Would you blame them if someone without the proper training cut off a finger?
