Captions are appearing above image in Epub

Question

I'm having an issue where my captions are appearing above the images in my epub. They are grouped with the images and anchored in the main text. The issue goes away when I select "Based on Page Layout" for my content order, but I need it to be based on the Articles panel because of how I have it set up. I've worked with captions before and have never seen this behavior. Any help would be appreciated.

None of what you're attempting will work. (There, wasn't that easy?)

First, I assume you're using reflowable EPUB? All bets off if you're trying this in FXL.

You can't anchor grouped items in EPUB export. It won't work. At best, their behavior will be unpredictable; I can't imagine why you'd see different results using Based on Pages/Articles. Nothing about that setting should affect flow within each text flow or article.

The only consistent method for captions I have found is to simply use a paragraph with appropriate formatting following each anchored image or illustration. That is —

End of body paragraph
Anchor for image
Image frame/Image
Caption paragraph
Next text paragraph

This can be optimized in every way except guaranteeing a caption won't be broken to a next virtual page.

I also recommend simply centering images in EPUB export. You should only attempt float/wrap around with very small images, no more than one-third viewport width.

I am curious as to why you're using Article order. In general, EPUBs export best from a single, continuous text flow and everything else has to be massaged and tweaked into working (at all, or almost as well). You may need to retructure your document to get completely consistent results.
