How can I change the background color and type color on the cover of a book designed with the InDesign Blurb Book Creator plugin?

As far as I understand, you can't change them using regular InDesign controls? In this case you may want to contact Blurb support with any questions regarding their plug-in.

I know nothing of the plugin, unfortunately. However, the only way to change "page" color in InDesign is with a graphic rectangle, placed behind all other elements and ideally in a layer of its own.

Look at the Layers list. The very bottom layer is probably named something like "Background" and is probably locked. Unlock it, select the full-page rectangle you find there, and set the color to whatever you like. Best to lock the layer again when you're done.

If the plugin used some other method... we'll have to figure out what that is.
