Changing default fonts in replace dialog and for missing fonts

I would like to change the default font that pops up in the Find Font dialog, as well as the font used when there is an unresolved missing font, to Courier. After removing Minion Pro from my system, the default Find Font became Times. The font used when there is a missing font on PDF export is always Myriad Pro. Changing the default font the normal way does not work. Minion and Myriad are too common to use for spotting potential font issues in a production environment. Any ideas?

I get the impression that you are used to (perhaps because of experience with older software) check your PDFs only.

 

That's not necessary! In the document, even though the on-screen font might be Myriad, InDesign still lists the original font name in the Find Fonts dialog. And you can also add a Preflight profile for this.

Thank you! It seems once a font replacement has been made, Preflight no longer knows that it was a missing font. The operator would need to view the Preflight before tampering with the Find font utility.

Minion Pro and Myriad Pro are Adobe's default fonts for serif or sanserif fonts that are either missing or unavailable. As such, they have a "special status" and Adobe is unlikely to make changes to Find Font to accomodate your desire to have different default fonts.

I think you are right. Maybe I just need to take a different approach.

Hi Smilleriscool:

 

Derek is right about how to change InDesign defualts, but Find Fonts isn't available when all files are closed so I don't think we can change them.

 

Do you actually use Myriad Pro in your documents? If not, it's an easy catch at the end of the layout. Before sending my files off to print, I always open Type > Find Fonts to see what odd fonts floated in with the Word docs and pull them out at that time. 

 

The other tip (it was a gamechanger for me) is to work with Style Override Highlighter on so that the teal highlighting shows the overrides. This requires that you use styles in your documents.

    To change the default font and size, set them without any document open then close and open InDesign.

      Thank you Derek. I am able to change the default font, but Indesign seems very persistent about suggesting Minion Pro in the Find Font dialog, and using Myriad Pro when there is an unresolved missing font. If one of our team makes a mistake we end up with a print PDF that is wrong, yet has a commonly used font that is hard to spot.
