I think that it is because the text is still selected. What happens if you deselect it?

Okay, it looks as if you still have the text selected. Under the General pane, does it say the character style is "based on" another? You might start over with a new Char style that is based on "none" so that it doesn't drag other settings with it.

Is the character style actually applied to the text you are showing? Does the base paragraph style have a "+" at the end of the style name?
