@Douglas24299010rpn7 I would love to have those oodles of time that you pointed to, but sometimes you need to start with a clean slate if nothing else is working. Anyhow, I see you have got it all sorted so all good.

Hi Douglas,

Not easy to try to figure out why Adobe does not simply say "upgrade" rather than simply stopping something from working even though you are still paying for it.

I have used all 18 versions of InDesign and have never encountered that message. I upgrade when I'm between jobs and go along my merry way.

Your orignal screenshot was pretty clear:

A file required to run InDesign was missing, and
Reinstalling would fix it.

This was not Adobe stopping the application from running until you upgraded. This was restoring a file that was removed or renamed that stopped InDesign from launching. The good news is that upgrading also restored the file—a bonus since you were resistant to the initial repair instructions. And yes, this community forum is run by volunteer InDesign experts like Manan, James and me, who have time to share their expertise with users who need help.

You can also use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to uninstall the application. I would suggest to unisntall everything Adobe that the tool finds and then reinstall. Details about the tool is given at the link below

Are you on Mac or Windows?

~~And what version of InDesign are/were you using?~~ I can make out the words 2023 in one of your screen shots.

So to find the CC desktop app:

Once you open it, you can remove InDesign and reinstall it.

Thanks so much for your help, i found Creative Cloud - sorry I was a serious user of In Design in 2000's, not used to Creative Cloud. Actually cannot see the point in it. Anyway noticed the upgrade thing, and upgraded. bingo. Solved the problem. You seem to have an unusal idea of what the Adobe platform and apps are, especially as a set. Creative Cloud (manager) is a central tool allowing you to choose which apps you want installed, and to monitor and maintain their versions.

And whatever your complaints about upgrading — I can't quite make sense or order of them — reinstallation is often the only solution when an application is damaged (files deleted or corrupted, accidental system changes made, etc.) You can usually reinstall any of several recent versions, if you don't want to upgrade (if, for example, you're in the middle of a large project and don't want to cope with feature changes)... but usually, if you're going to do a clean up and repair of an Adobe app installation, it's pragmatic to install the most current version.

Hope that gives you some context for the overall 'system' you're working with, here. It's a lot more than one standalone app... any one app.

I would suggest following the instructions in your first screen shot. Completey remove and then reinstall the InDesign. You can do both from the CC Desktop app.
