Hi, I just want to be able to insert a tick where I can change the colour, I have tried inserting as a glyph or symbol but cant see an option to change the colour. Please help.
Here is some text and a glyph I chose from the Glyphs panel (Type > Glyphs):
Open the Swatches panel. Select your glyph with the Type tool:
Apply any color to the glyph with the Type tool and the Swatches panel.

Thanks. Some glyphs it works on and some it doesnt. Ie, with some ticks it will change all the colour and others it will only change coloour of the outline.

Can you show us an example of a glyph where only the outline is chosen? Where are you getting your "ticks" for the ones that don't work?

If possible upload a copy of the file showing the "tic" that doesn't work.

What I showed you how to colorize is a character in a font. You can't do that with any graphic, like a JPEG file, which that image probably is.
Pick characters (glyphs) from "picture" fonts like Wingdings, Webdings, Zapf Dingbats. Those can be colorized.

To change the color of an image like that, you would have to use an image editing program (e.g, Photoshop Express), then use File > Place to place the image into InDesign.

That looks like a check box for a PDF.

I asked for a copy of the object, but I think it's just a picture of it so it's hard to tell.
