Converting Word label templates to InDesign

Hi,

I realise I could break out the old ruler and do it the hard way, but I figure there must be an easier way to do this ?

I've got a bunch of label templates (e.g. https://www.labelident.eu/etiketten-vorlagen/Etikettenvorlage_046x021.doc )

Word being the hideous program that it is, there's no clean way of getting dimensions and spacings.  For a start, Word rulers are a horror to deal with.

So, does anyone have a clever way of transposing Word templates to inDesign ? I figure someone here must have been in a similar position ?

(If it makes any difference to answers proposed, I'm on the latest and greatest CC 2019)

Did you try placing the word document? Most of those label templates are just tables and IME, they convert pretty nicely.

I have in the past saved it as a PDF - open that in Illustator - tidy it up - and copy and paste to indesign.

I usually export from Word to a pdf, and place the pdf in InDesign.  It can be made non-printing, so the boxes won't show in final output.  Or put on a separate layer that can be hidden, or told not to print.

Must admit I didn't try placing it ... I didn't think it could be that simple

Just did, seems to work, except it doesn't keep margins, but I guess measuring up a couple of margins is a lot less work than the alternative I was dreading !

Been a while since I did it, but if you check the margins in the Word page setup you can duplicate those in InDesign and then place the file. Make sure to show options when doing so to get everything set up properly.
