Question

Create Alternate Layout>Page Size>Custom Page Size>Name issue

When I set the width and height for my Custom Page Size, then name it (1080 SOCIAL) and then select "Add" so that I can easily choose it again in the future... this happens:

My custom name is cut off at the front, both in the list and on the newly made page. My name "1080 SOCIAL" became "80 SOCIAL" forevermore. If I try to modify it, it saves it again minus ANOTHER two first letters/numbers!!! So weird... I tried deleting it, adding a different name, rebooting, everything.

Anyone else?

Hi @GCFCU Marketing:

I see you responded to the OS and version number further up thread and I missed it. Sorry about that.

My demos were on 20.1 but macOS, not Windows. Since I couldn't recreate it it is either a Windows-specific bug, or corrupt preferences. If preferences, see https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/. And to see if it is a bug, you might download v19.5.1 to see if it happens there.

If you decide it is a 20.1 bug, you can report it here: https://indesign.uservoice.com/

Hi @GCFCU Marketing:

What version of InDesign are you using? I couldn't replicate the issue with InDesign 20.1 (see first half of the video below).

Also, you are taking additional steps that you don't need (selecting Custom)—you could just add the new name and select the size (second half of video). Note that the portrait names are truncated but the full alternative layout names are visible at the top of the Pages pane, and by hovering, as previously mentioned.

I wonder if streamlining the process will eliminate the issue? Or updating, if you are behind on a patch? Both?

As a heads up,  wehave file size limitations here. I'm guessing your MP4 was compressed—I could see the big picture, but it was tough to see the details. As you can see, all the words are fuzzy so it's a bit tough to follow, and it's possible I have misunderstood your question a second time. If so, my apologies in advance. Please just come back and clarify.

Thank you, Barb-- That way of naming worked for the open document. However, it does not save the custom size for later documents. So maybe the bug is in the presets of the "Create Alternate Layout" panel? I'm lazy, which is why I used "Custom..." to create this huge list of custom presets:

Hi @GCFCU Marketing:

What's weird about the Alternate Layout columns is that are they dependent on the width of the page thumbnail, and we cannot drag them left or right to make the column wider or narrower. We can move the columns, but we cannot adjust the width of the columns. If you hover, however, it will give you the full name.

Unfortunately, we are not mind readers...

What platform, OS and InDesign versions?
