I have a complete .indb file which has 20 .indd files inside.

One of those 20 indd files is a TOC, It just has a list of chapters in the book.

I need to find out how to populate that TOC with the page numbers for each chapter

AND

add page numbers to each page of each chapter.

It seems the procedure for doing this within an .indb is different than doing it from 1 .indd file

It just occurred to me, in a Book, you have to click More Options in the Table of Contents dialog window, and check "Include Book Documents" to generate a ToC for a whole Book.

Here's a video about Tables of Contents that might help: http://www.jeffwitchel.net/2015/08/setting-up-an-indesign-table-of-contents-automatically/

As far as page numbering within a book, it's no different than doing it in a single document. As long as you have a "Current

Page Number" marker on your Master Pages (Type > Insert Special Character > Markers), it should work in all chapters. If you change the order of you chapters in the Book panel, the page numbering should update.

Hope this helps!

Hi Matthew:

I think Jeff has likely already answered your question. If you agree, please mark whichever one solved the issue as correct—or let us know and we can do it.

I'll just add that a TOC can be in its own InDesign file or can be part of a multi-page front matter InDesign file. The only things to be aware of when creating a TOC for a book vs a single .indd file:

  • Be consistent in your use of style names across the .indd files (For example, all chapter titles in all of the .indd files might be called Chapter Title. If some are called Chapter Title and some Chapter title, you will run into trouble. Same with use of folders. If some Chapter Titles are in a folder and some are not=trouble.
  • Remembering to Include Book Documents as per Jeff's second response.

That's it!
