Data Merge Issue: Importing Excel Paragraphs with Line Breaks into InDesign

New Here ,
Oct 30, 2024 Oct 30, 2024

Hi there brains trust.

I need to data merge from an excel field which contains a paragraph, ie text with line breaks, into an inDesign text field. There are three lines in the excel cell but when I merge the dataq I can only see the first line. I have nearly 8,000 rows of data hence a manual fix is out of the question. Is there an option within InDesign that will make all the lines of the excell cell come into the text field as three lines?

The field in question is conferral text.

Thanks in advance

Hi Mick @ Home ,

opened your sample Excel file in Excel and cannot see any line breaks in the file.

Just missing text, I guess…

With line breaks you like to preserve for Datamerge I would change the line break character to a character that does not exist otherwise in your text, like a § character for example and change it back after the merge in Indesign to a end-of-line-character or a end-of-paragraph character…

Thank you very much Uwe.
That is the only suggestion put forward so far and it makes sense on paper.

Thanks once again, I'll give it a go.
