Deleting empty space and other text disappears

Hello,

When I delete free space on my page, it erases the text above it (see attached images). Any thoughts on how I can fix this issue?

This file was put together with a lot of overrides, and styles based on styles that don't make a lot of sense (to me, anyway). I can't pinpoint the specific issue, but when it looks like the text has disappeared, it is still there, it is just transparent (even though the color is set to black).

When I clear the overrides, the issue is removed, but so is a bunch of the formatting. If this was my file, I would go ahead remove the overrides from this page, and create styles for the unique looks needed for the first two paragraphs at the top of the page.

(Note: when the text is copied to a brand new file, overrides intact, this doesn't happen.)

Does it erase the text, or does it back-flow to a previous page?
