Any ideas on the best way to design/create interesting background for page spreads that are basically a prompt and lines to write on? This is for a writing journal for college students studying French. It would be nice if each page or spread was different enough--aiming to inspire, while perhaps retaining some common elements/themes so that it appears coherent.

i think you can make a design lines, fillable spaces and export it as fillable PDF and they can write.
for sample designs or templates
when you create new doc.
you can download from free templates and search whatever template you want.

Thank you Manal for your suggestions. The writing journal will only be available in print version. I find the templates very useful for design ideas. Most, however, are quite "busy" whereas I'm trying to create a minimalist space where students write, pen to paper. The challenge is to make the page spread interesting enough to hold their attention and maybe even inspire them.

You say these students are studying French. I would consider using photos of France in the backgrounds, perhaps screened back 50% or so so they don't dominate.
