Do lock files work?

I'm working with someone via Dropbox.

I can see the IDLK file when he has a document open, but he can't see the IDLK if I have a document open.

We both seem to be able to freely open a file that the other person has open.

They sure don't seem to work at all... is there something else we should be doing?

InDesign lock files do not sync via any cloud-sharing service. It is the one weak spot in this workflow.

Communication is key. Make sure everyone involved is aware when someone is working on it.

Interestingly enough, InCopy lock files do work.

      The safest option would be to get in touch and agree each time who is working on the file.

       

      The lock file is for local use - it won't be synchronised - there are scripts to simulate locking.

        Offtop: Better to use it shared folder through VPN (real VPN, not VPN to "be from other country").
